The design of an oceanfront property along the dramatic bedrock can be fascinating. Working with rock formations, polished and shaped during the ice age in Sweden, is a unique landscape to admire and treat with respect. The goal of this site was to celebrate the land and the views, with minimal arrangement in the space.
The design of this steep garden in the Stockholm archipelago involve creative challenges, balancing function with aesthetics, maximizing the vista with the extreme conditions of steep terrain.
Granite stepping stones amongst gravel and pockets of planting were designed, to resonate with the bedrock, withstanding extreme climatic conditions and weather.
Given the natural landscape, a series of stairs find their way, like a floating river, cascading down to the ocean in the most natural places, in the same rhythm as the elevation of the granite bedrock. The long pathway is gently lit, with light fittings close to the ground, not to obstruct and to be a much needed guide from the hidden beach below, in the evening.
